Pearl Lam is a Pioneer of Intercultural Understanding through Art
Pearl Lam is an enduring force within the global art scene and is a formidable advocate for intercultural understanding. She is widely considered as a pioneer in bridging the cultural gap between East and West by creating powerful dialogues around art, traditions and culture. Since the early 1990s, she has worked tirelessly to introduce Chinese Contemporary art to the Western world using her visibility within major international art fairs, while also showcasing contemporary artists from the West and other parts of the world to Shanghai and Hong Kong.
An enigmatic figure in the art world, Pearl Lam has made a significant impact on the global art scene. In conjunction with the China-France Culture Year in 2003, Pearl Lam played a crucial role in presenting a critically acclaimed exhibition entitled Awakening: La Mandarin, an event that brought together artists, academics and dignitaries from all corners of the world to have a deeper understanding of China’s ancient culture which was represented through its diverse modern artworks. This exchange of cultural understanding planted a seed within Pearl Lam to champion continuous dialogue between the East and West. This desire led to the creation of the China Art Foundation in 2008 which aims to foster cross-cultural ties and break transnational boundaries through conversations about art.
Pearl Lam is a firm advocate of the profound belief that “art has no passport”. This is the philosophy behind her desire to foster closer ties between East and West through mutual understanding of art, traditions and cultural heritage. Pearl Lam considers herself a global citizen and frequently travels between the US, Asia, Europe and Africa to continue learning about various art forms and creative expressions worldwide.
Pearl Lam’s commitment to advancing intercultural understanding forms the bedrock of her profession. She is careful to ensure that the events she helps facilitate truly move across borders and across industries too, also bridging the gap between artists, academics and historians worldwide. A passionate communicator, she continues to create daring conversations within, not just the art world, but beyond it as well. She hosts in-depth discussions through The Pearl Lam Podcast, a podcast series which interviews emerging artists, creators and influential figures who are changing the world’s future and who come from a diverse array of industries, backgrounds and life experiences.
